An Immunopathologic Study in Allergic Conjunctivitis

Abstract
Allergic conjunctivitis is a bilateral eye disease ecmbining symptoms of extreme itching, photophobia, tearing and scanty mucous discharge. Clinically, immunologic studies of the conjunctival biopsy specimen from the 36 patients (26 eyes of 13 eyes: male, and 23 eyes: female) of allergic conjunctivitis were carried out with immunoperoxidase technique of PAP staining on the conjunctival specimens and immuneglebulirs (1g) were counted.
The results were as follows:
1. Specimen disclosed plasma cells of Ig-containing cells in the substantia propria, which
gradually decreased in amount in the deeper layers and were absent from the epithelium.
2. All of IgA, G, M, E were increased in allergic conjunctivitis as compared with control
group.
3. Of these four classes of immuneglobulins, IgE and IgA were observed statistically siginificantly increased compared with the control group (p<0.05). It suggests that there may be a definite immediate (Type 1) hypersensitivity ccmponent in allergic conjunctivitis.
